I've worked here a lot since I moved to New York. The small size of the venue doesn't lend itself to the possibility of paying more than a bill a man (then again, what NYC venue does anymore?), but the atmosphere and the hang make up for it. The hang is pretty legendary, and the place offers the opportunity for young musicians to hang and learn from established leaders and legends, alike. An added bonus of this place is the fact that, after you play here a couple of times and the staff gets to recognize you, you are comped entry for life. Just don't abuse your privileges as "part of the family" and don't fuck with the staff.

I played a CD release gig here. We played two sets, beginning at 6:00 pm. We had standing-room-only for both sets, and Mitch (former owner, runs the door) raved about us, saying he would highly recommend that the owner re-book us.
That was several years ago. Despite hundreds of emails, dropping off CDs, etc., we can't get a second booking. I know others who have had similar experiences. It is difficult for me to figure this place out.
The jam sessions can be great (can also be not-so-great), but can also get a little click-ish. If the house band doesn't know who you are, and if there are a lot of people trying to get up, you may not get a chance.
