Reviews from musicians

Yes, it's a great place to play. The previous reviewers have it right -- the separation of the rooms is good. There's always an appreciative audience, and I *do* appreciate that the barstaff makes the rounds with the tip jar AGGRESSIVELY. They also promote their lineup heavily. There's a good crowd of regulars. It's a good place to play, and/or hang. However, there's no guarantee usually. That's why this is getting only 3 stars.

1 thing I love about Barbes is that the music room is the music room (like a recital room, really), the bar is in the barroom.
Another thing I dig is that while you're only making tips there, they do an excellent job of working the jar, I've made (relatively) good money there, nice that the artist doesn't have to hassle the audience for money, too.
Great owners nice staff some backline, in my top 5 places to play.

Playing in the back room is nice because it's so small and people come to listen, while the noisy crowd stays in the bar area. You get free beer if you're playing as well as the entire cover charge, but they generally don't give you a guarantee. The acoustics are pretty good and the staff are friendly. Barbes is also good at getting press for their shows, often getting shows listed in NY Times.
