My previous band played Ash Street a few times. Yes they split the door between the bands, but unlike other clubs that do the same, you can make some money on a weekend night simply because they get a lot of causal traffic due to the location. You are not being hired per say, but trying to get your foot in the door as a musician.

Heather does the booking and runs sound, and is also the queen of the Portland scene, she has been booking Ash Street for over 10 years, and she must be doing something right, because many clubs have come and gone, but Ash Street is still there.

And I have seen awesome packed shows with good sound at Ash Street, quite a few in fact. Mostly it is local bands trying to get a start, but they do get some touring acts and larger acts from time to time.

From barflymag.com "...shruggable covers belying the size of the stage or quality of sound."

One of the places most infamous for splitting the meager door between multiple bands.

Has any one ever heard any one say "I heard a great band at the Ash st., and the sound was superb?" Not really worth it.
